A bowling ball does not simply roll back by itself. After reaching the pit area, it is separated from the pin-handling process and directed into a return system.
Depending on the equipment, the journey can involve lifts, tracks, belts, wheels, and conveyors. The visible return at the approach is only the last stage of a system that spans much of the lane.
Future articles can examine return-system designs, common failure points, maintenance practices, and safety features.
